I specialise in polishing writing to ensure it’s clear, effective, and great to read, whether it’s a work of history, a thesis, or a public sector report. I proofread/copy edit and conduct structural edits. I also conduct reads for authors as their work is emerging, including Tara June Winch’s award-winning novel The Yield (2019) and Cal Flynn’s non-fiction Thicker Than Water (2016). Some recent work:
- Heidi Norman (ed.), Land Back! Aboriginal land rights in New South Wales, today and always (UNSW Press, 2025) [structural work and copy-editing of a multi-authored publication to translate academic work for a general audience]
- copy-editing International Journal of Indigenous Health, vol. 19, no. 1, 2024
I was project editor at Dictionary of Sydney project coordinator/editor/writer of the illustrated NSW Centenary of Anzac Book, New South Wales and the Great War (2016). I’ve edited a range of professional publications and reports, including in-house magazines and newsletters, place-making studies, heritage reports, interpretive signage, press releases and annual reports. I’ve been editing Bridge Housing’s annual report since 2016 and recently edited 100 Atmospheres: Studies in scale and wonder – a multi-authored work created at the University of Wollongong.
As a qualified academic, I understand the requirements of written work at honours, masters and doctoral level and will work with students to produce the best possible result. I’ve edited history theses and have also worked on PhDs in midwifery, education, and theology. I’m registered to edit higher-degree research theses with Western Sydney University.
I’ve spent more than a decade working in not-for-profit organisations preparing annual reports that meet the highest governance standards. As a a senior policy officer (writer) at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, within the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, I produced high quality, plain English, policy documents that were published as part of the final report. I am passionate about plain English and active voice:
Naomi edited this year’s annual report for Bridge Housing. Her editing work was excellent, and went far beyond just looking for inconsistencies and errors. As well as conducting a robust structural and copy edit, and a final proof-read, Naomi challenged us to think about how we express our ideas. She was not afraid to tell us where the writing could be improved, and where the industry-specific terminology should be explained. The end result is the strongest annual report that we have delivered to date.
